container garden failure

I planted 2 tomato plants and 2 pepper in 3 gallon buckets at the start of this summer. There was a huge amount of rain that flooded my plants . I put drain holes but the tomato plants never recovered. Last week was a heat wave that completely killed the tomatoes. The pepper plants are not growing at all. I’ll get tiny peppers. So they are on their own. Rain will water them. Next year I’ll get plants sooner in the season. I’ll also get compost early as I have this years plants in about and inch of compost and the rest clay and black dirt. Oh well still learning container garden
