Working as School Bus driver

Herb a guy I regret ever meeting seemed to be a friend at the time was driving a elementary school bus and convinced me to do it too. M&M Bus company. They bought old school buses and barely kept them running. I learned how to drive a big vehicle and they told me to get a chauffer’s license. So I did, and they gave me a blue card and a route.

I had an elementary route. There were no assistants those days. I tried to keep control, but it was hard. What I noticed was 3rd graders tormented 1st graders and 5th graders tormented 4th graders. The other grades set in terror. I eventually I got all the troublemakers in the front row. One rebelled and through snowballs at the bus when let off. I just went inside and talked to the principal and the kid lost the right to ride a bus for 2 weeks. His parents had to bring him. This was before this was common. He got back on and was a changed kid. Quiet and no longer a troublemaker. I guess his parents put him on the straight and narrow.

The busses were falling apart. The bus I drove had bad breaks. I had a terrifying experience that made a quit. In Muncie there was a railroad track on a hill. you have to stop and open the door. You are at a big slant. My breaks gave out and I rolled back as it was a manual transmission and first gear didn’t work. I was rolling back into traffic. Kids were screaming I was terrified there was going to a bad accident. Thankfully everyone cleared out of the way. They got another bus to take the kids home. My bus was towed in. I quit as if the busses were dangerous
