I lived in a room in this mansion when I went to Ball State. I met some friends there. One stayed a friend to the End. Jim Lloyd. I met him moving in. He saw me carrying some heavy stuff up the stairs and he offered to help. After that I started hanging out with him. He was unique. He had a belief that everything you own should fit in the bed of a pickup truck. I teased him decades later when he had a real nice house with a printing press in the basement.
Wendy was a stripper I knew that lived there and suggestion that I move in. She was cool for a long time. 3 housed later and 2 other roommates later she went her own way never to be heard of again by me. What I remember most about here was going out the pick lilacs to put in her room. We drove around Muncie cutting flowers off of all the Lilac bushes as we could find. Stuff like that was fun.
Rocky was flamboyant gay guy. This is no problem to me. He was always bringing guys to his room. It was a running joke he had a haram. He was a roommate in three houses too. He was booted when his share of the rent was paid by check to me and I paid the landlord. $300 of checks bounced. He could not come up with money. Out he went. Did one interesting thing with him. Me, Wendy, Rocky and three more I don’t remember the names of went to Chicago. We ate good pizza at Ginos East. He talked us into go into a gay night club. I went just to have the experience. It was there I found out I was a bear. Had one gut tell me I had a beautiful face. I just replied I was straight. We drank there and watched the show. We left drunker and went back to where we were spending the night. Drove back to Muncie the next day. He was cool but he had to go
Brandon was also a gay member of the mansion. He was so damn dang jittery people gave hit pot for free to calm him down.
Dennis and Mandy – Dennis owned the Mansion. He bought it from the School System. A lot of walls on the First level had been painted institutional green. Dennis added more problems. He started putting up walls in the larger rooms to subdivide them for more places to rent. What the problem was he uses wire from 1905 the black with two wires. The coating was breaking off.
Mandy felt she was the Lady of the House and everyone else should show her loyalty and great respect. She was not a great Lady; she had slept with 5 guys before she latched on Dennis.
Dennis was the son of some slumlords in NY. They had paid for the house and told him what to do with it. With this plan of action, he screwed up big time.
Dennis and Mandy got married in the mansion. the front room with the grand staircase was beautiful. At this point this were still normal in the house. It all fell apart on their honeymoon. The day after they left the power to the mansion was cut off. Literally cut off. Dennis had climbed up to the power lines and rigged a dangerous hot wire. The power guys cut it down and came looking for Dennis. It seems he hadn’t paid his power bill in 2 years. He had collected money from the residents for power. That money is what funded their honeymoon.
We were pissed. No power meant to fans running in the summer and the fridge and freezer were going warm as people got their food out of them. One guy I can’t remember the name of had the number of the hotel Dennis and Mandy were at. We call him and he said in a week he would fix the problem and not to bother him. That lost him all his residents. Everyone started looking for a new place to live. Everyone moved on day 3. Dennis came back to an empty house.
In those days I didn’t let people get away with crap like that. Jim was the same way. I had keys since I had prepaid rent. Operation induce fear when into motion. I started a rumor when I was giving the keys back, I was bringing 20 bikers with me, and we would hospitalize Dennis. This rumor blew up. Dennis was a nervous wreck from what I was told. They had moved next door to avoid dealing with residents except for rent. Mandy got so stressed out she pulled a butcher knife out of her purse and tried to stab Dennis’ mom. Divorce happened.
Operation cause Dennis major problem was in effect too. Jim had me doing powerlifting for 6 months, I was strong he was stronger. I had to keys to the mansion still, so we went into the mansion one night and went down to the basement. Dennis had a DJ setup and records down there. Conveniently there was a pile of bricks next o it. Bricks vs records and turn tables. Brick trump vinyl and plastic. Not a single record was in one piece. the turn table we bent and the plastic around it shattered.
Operation screw the knife into Dennis was the next step. There was a security door to a room that Dennis kept people’s items that he thought would pay for the rent when they left. Two strong dudes can open a secure door. I pulled on the frame. He pulled on the doorknob. Pop goes the door. several stereos, computers, and a lot of bikes were there. We got on the phone in the basement and called the people who owned the stuff to come take it back. In an hour the room was empty. We reversed the pulling and put the door back in the proper positions. Then we had one more step. the room was directly under a huge concrete porch. There was chunk of concrete that was a circle. We put our fingers in the groves and lifted about 300lb block out and moved it 10′ away. the hole was big enough for someone to fit through. The block was heavier than Dennis could move. He would have to hire someone to move it back
When I returned the keys, I was alone. There were 5 cop cars in the parking lot. Dennis would have to pay for them as nothing happened and he was worrying about nothing. I would love to find out what the rumor was when it got to Dennis
